This route starts in the Stickle Ghyll Carpark at the top of the Great Langdale Valley. If you drive up to the top of the Valley, The carpark is located on the right hand side on a turning just after the entrance to the New Dungeon Ghyll Hotel and Stickle Barn Lanty Slee.

If you’d prefer to walk from The Langdale Estate to make it a longer walk, you can add 8km and approx 2 hours to the numbers above.

Route / description.

At the top of the carpark there is a sign that says ‘To Stickle Tarn’. Follow that sign and the route will take you up the side of Stickle Ghyll to the Tarn.

After a few of minutes walking you will come to a bridge, if you cross and go up the right hand side of the Ghyll, the route is slightly more rocky and scrambly with some uneven stepping stones than if you stick to the left hand side of the ghyll. Both routes will lead you to the same destination. There are beautiful waterfalls to admire all the way up to the Tarn.

As you approach the tarn, you will see a big slab of rock right in front of you, this is Pavey Ark. Harrison Stickle is the peak to the left of the tarn.

Follow the path to the right and you will follow the route towards the back of the tarn.  As you get to the back of the Tarn, you will see that the path veers off to the right as if it is going up around the back of Pavey Ark. This is the way to the summit. This is a rocky route and there are a lot of loose rocks so be careful with your footing. There is no obvious Cairn when you reach the summit of Pavey Ark but when you are at the top, you will know!!

Follow the path along to Harrison Stickle, keeping Stickle Tarn in view to your left hand side. The path is clear and there is not a massive descent/ ascent between the two summits.

After summiting Harrison Stickle, follow the path that takes you away from Stickle Tarn. Once you are off the rocky summit, you will see a Cairn below on a grassy path that verges to the left, take that path down whilst taking in the spectacular view of Pike O stickle straight ahead.  You will reach a dip in the mountains between Harrison Stickle, Loft Crag and Pike O Stickle. At this point, you will see paths veering off in all directions, take the grassy one to the left that looks like it is taking you back around the side of Harrison Stickle.

The descending path is not one for the faint hearted, there is a sheer drop to the right hand side into the breathtaking Dungeon Ghyll.

When you reach the bottom of the hill, take the path to the left which will lead you back to the Stickle Ghyll Car Park.
