Summary.

Right on the doorstep Silver How is a lovely walk that can be extended in many directions depending on how you feel or the weather. You can follow our route or use it as guide to make up your own variation which is pretty straightforward. With iconic Lake District views and a perfectly placed refreshment stop on the way home this is a great walk year-round.

Setting off towards Ambleside from the main entrance turn left at the crossroads at the end of the Langdale Estate and follow the road up the hill turning right towards Red Bank and Grasmere until three quarters of the way up there is an obvious path on the left.

Route / description.

  1. Starting from the Langdale Estate, head through Chapel Stile turning left in to the Bays Brown camp site. Follow the road through the campsite heading straight on where the road forks to the left towards the farm buildings (a shorter alternative).
  2. Head over the cattle grid and follow the path round. Where the path forks and there is a bridge to your right, keep left here going past a farm building directly on your right.
  3. Take the left-hand path which ascends up to a gate, eventually bringing you out at the back of Bays Brown campsite.
  4. Keeping the campsite and its farm buildings on your left, stick to the path which eventually becomes an undulating road bringing you out at The Eltermere Inn.
  5. Turn left and head back to Elterwater village. Complete a loop of the village to make this run just over 4 miles.
